(born and raised on Vancouver Island)
I am a follower of Christ, a husband (of Becky), and a father (of Esther and Adeline).
After moving to Canada in 1993 from South Africa I grew up in Brentwood Bay, attending Claremont Secondary and then later the University of Victoria. I served a number of years as a teacher on the peninsula (privately through home-schooling, as a Teacher on Call for Saanich School District #63 and then at Pacific Christian School). I long to see Greater Victoria, specifically the Saanich Peninsula, transformed socially, culturally, and spiritually by God’s grace through God’s gospel. Church planting is one of the most effective means of connecting with new residents, new generations, and new people groups.
I studied at Regent College, was ordained as a missionary clergy (2014) in the Anglican tradition, and was commissioned to plant our new site of The Table church on the Saanich Peninsula. Prior to church planting with The Table, I worked as an assistant pastor at Church of the Ascension (Langley, BC), and before that I served on The Table’s original launch team and graduated from a two-year Table urban missionary apprenticeship.
I am a disciple of Jesus, a wife (of Jacob) and a mother (of Lily and Eve). I long to see more people discover the saving love of God and begin to follow Him daily.
At 2 weeks old, my parents brought me to Victoria to live, so I am officially the only pastor at The Table who can truly say I’m a local! My love for God was fostered by my family and the close, tight-knit and supportive Anglican Church I grew up in. That church community gave me a vision for what the church can be to everyone who feels alone.
I have been speaking about my faith in public since the age of 15, and I love telling others about the love God has for them. If you want to know, just ask me! I’ve been in some form of ministry since I was 19 years old, and I love the church! It has been the place where I found friends and faith for life.
After completing her BA at the University of Victoria, I felt led to answer the call to theological study, so I moved to Vancouver to complete my MDiv at Regent College. During my time there, I furthered my love for teaching and preaching under the tutelage of mentors including the Revs. David Short, J. I. Packer, and Darrell Johnson. They taught me so much about the how’s and why’s of communicating the truth of the gospel.
In the spring of 2006 I celebrated the completion of my graduate degree by marrying Jacob Buurma, a fellow MDiv-er and Regent alum. Soon after, I accepted a post as Pastoral Assistant at Church of the Resurrection in East York. After 7 years of working and living in Toronto and the births of our 2 girls, we both decided it was time to come home and start our own communications business and to work with The Table. After all I’ve experienced in church ministry, I have to say that working with the Table team has been a definite highlight.
I love sharing good food, good conversation and great stories!
